Dr. Briscoe obtained her undergraduate degree from Centre College, where she majored in Psychology and Biology and conducted research in child and adolescent health psychology. Dr. Briscoe completed medical school and residency training in pediatric medicine at the University of Louisville and was awarded for work in the area of developmental/behavioral pediatrics and genetics.
After years serving as a general pediatrician, Dr. Briscoe began to recognize that parents sometimes avoid seeking help for a child struggling with problems with attention or hyperactivity. Oftentimes, parents fear that a primary care doctor (or nurse practioner) will ‘knee-jerk’ diagnose their child with ADHD and throw them on a medication without considering other factors (e.g. environmental, psychological, spiritual, etc.) that may be involved.
Ideal diagnosis and treatment of ADHD involves a thorough evaluation by a dedicated and experienced doctor who has time to carefully consider all the factors that contribute to a child’s difficulties and extensive knowledge of the available treatments. Primary care offices are not always equipped to provide this level of care, and brief visits with a primary care provider may not be enough to help a child struggling with ADHD reach their full potential.
Recognizing the needs and concerns of parents – as well as the harmful effects of undiagnosed, wrongly diagnosed, or suboptimally treated ADHD – Dr. Briscoe pursued additional study and training to develop expertise in optimally treating ADHD.
In our specialty clinic, Dr. Briscoe seeks to provide an exceptional level of care to families whose children are struggling. Working in a non-pressured setting with plenty of time to spend with each of her patients, she has the time to get to know and understand the child (or adolescent) and to gather helpful information from family members, teachers, and other persons involved in careing for the child. Oftentimes, Dr. Briscoe will visit the child’s classroom and directly observe the child’s behavior first hand and speak with the teacher face-to-face. All this to ensure that all factors that contribute to a child’s behavior and attention – environmental, stress, relationships, spiritual, learning disabilities, etc. – are taken into account in understanding and treating the child’s difficulties.
When a child’s symptoms are determined NOT to be due simply to ADHD, Dr. Briscoe ensures that all underlying issues are appropriately addressed. When ADHD is a present and medication is indicated, Dr. Briscoe’s knowledge and expertise ensure that medication is safe and optimally effective. She provides extensive and in-depth council to parents and children regarding all available treatments and works closely with other top-of-the-line professionals (e.g. neuropsychologists, therapists, social workers, christian counselors, ADHD coaches) to ensure that her patients reach their full potential in life.
